The 5th life of Stiemerbeek, Genk Belgium
The presentation focuses on the valley of the Stiemerbeek, a 16 km long creek crossing the highly and dispersedly urbanized area of Genk-Diepenbeek in Flanders, Belgium. Once at the heart of the region, the valley got neglected and abused during the 20th century. It got profoundly marked by successive waves of industrial and urban development. Today, however, the potential of the valley for recreational, ecological and (alternative) water management functions is being reconsidered. The challenge resides in a reappropriation of the landscape features inherited from the past to fullfil these new functions.
